Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
What you will be doing
Advanced packaging for sensitive products requires low permeation to moisture and oxygen in order to allow their long-term conservation. Current solutions either involve metal-coating films, which are not transparent, or inorganic films, which are brittle and do not provide very low permeation properties. Hybrid layers based on mixed polymer and inorganic layers provide an interesting solution for transparent and flexible gas permeation barriers, however their fabrication is still complex and potentially high cost. The goal of the internship is to work on new gas phase deposition methods for depositing advanced hybrid gas permeation barrier coatings.
The student will be in charge of the deposition of hybrid (inorganic and organic) thin films on polymer substrates by atomic layer deposition and chemical vapour deposition, and on their characterisation as gas permeation barrier, He/she will benefit from the material analysis platform in LIST, including secondary ion mass spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, etc., as well as on gas permeation test measurements developed in LIST. He/she will try to correlate the chemical and physical properties of the obtained films with the gas permeation properties in order to understand the influence of various deposition parameters on the functional properties.
Which profile we are looking for
- Master thesis in materials science, with speciality in thin film synthesis and characterization (on-going)
- Speak English is mandatory
