Welcome

You are about to start your application process for:

IE-2110 - INTERN IN SUPPLY CHAIN NETWORKS AND AGENT-BASED MODELLING FOR SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT

IE-2110 - INTERN IN SUPPLY CHAIN NETWORKS AND AGENT-BASED MODELLING FOR SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT

Your work environment

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

https://www.list.lu/

You will be part of the LIST Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

The "Environmental Research and Innovation" (ERIN) department of LIST has an opening for an Intern position. The successful candidate will be integrated in the SUSTAIN Unit, which develops knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human-driven systems.

Responsibilities

What you will be doing

Supply chains networks (SCN) are complex systems that arise from the interaction between organisations and individuals that can involve financial, physical and information flows. These networks are adaptative and can experience structural changes during time, whether due to the dynamic nature of the market or a particular disruption. Because of this, the study of the structural dynamism of the system is relevant to address the intrinsic complexity of a SCN. For this, methods derived from graph and complexity theory, such as Agent Based Modelling (ABM), can be used to assess relevant characteristics of existing or prospective SCNs, like resilience and sustainability.

The intern will participate on the development of a SCN structure (i.e., identifying firms, interactions, procurement behaviours and market conditions) that will be later built into an ABM simulation software developed by the research team. The intern will be in constant exposure to the development team, composed by computer scientists and experts on sustainability assessment.

The objectives of this internship are to:

  • Map, gather and curate supply chain network data related to a working case study
  • Support the development team in the establishment of agent’s behaviours and market conditions to be used in the model
  • Enhance the interpretation of results and facilitate the calibration iterations during the modelling phase.
