Welcome

You are about to start your application process for:

IE-2113 - INTERNSHIP IN LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF BIOGAS PRODUCTION (M/F)

IE-2113 - INTERNSHIP IN LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF BIOGAS PRODUCTION (M/F)

Your work environment

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

https://www.list.lu/

You will be part of the LIST Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

Responsibilities

What you will be doing

Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a holistic approach for evaluating the global impacts of different products and processes. Agricultural production activities are generally complex, i.e. they include multiple interacting actors with different behaviours and objectives. In order to model this complexity, the SUSTAIN Unit of LIST has developed a model coupling Agent Based Modelling (ABM) and LCA. One of the elements that are part of the farm business is the production of biogas from local biomass.

The intern will support the team in the definition of life cycle inventories (LCI) of Luxembourg farming outputs, which include crops, meat, milk and biogas. The results of the study will be used by the team to improve the definition of the agent-based model.

The intern will be in constant exchange with the development team, composed by computer scientists and experts on sustainability assessment.

Visits to local farms and biogas cooperatives at the aim of conducting interviews or collecting data might be necessary in the course of the internship. For this reason, holding a driving licence would be an asset.

The internship will allow the successful candidate to learn:

  • How to conduct a product LCA, with focus on the sustainability assessment of agricultural products
  • The details of biogas production practices in Luxembourg
  • How to interpret results and select appropriate parameter in the model
  • How to use Phyton for LCA studies (If the candidate is interested in deepening this aspect)
must have requirements

Which profile we are looking for

  • MSc student in industrial engineering, environmental engineering, environmental sciences, operational research, sustainability management
  • General knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (focus on agricultural sustainability is a plus)
  • Knowledge of environmental life cycle databases (e.g., ecoinvent or Agribalyse) would be an additional asset but it is not mandatory
  • Programming skills (Python and Java) are considered a strong advantage (but not mandatory)
  • Good team working skills, with a creative problemsolving approach
  • Autonomous and proactive working attitude
