Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

The postdoctoral researcher will belong to the Ferroic Materials for Transducers group lead by Emmanuel Defay. This project will be part of the Inter-Institutional Research Group (IRG) ‘Physics of Ferroics Materials’ we have with the University of Luxembourg. 


Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

Piezoelectric materials can convert mechanical strain in electric signal or induce the movement of a device by applying a voltage. They are extremely useful in microsystems industry as thin films and spread rapidly on all mobile devices (microphone, loudspeakers, acoustic filters, haptic devices). The best piezoelectric thin films contain lead and finding a lead-free alternative has been a long-lasting quest for more than 20 years. Potassium Sodium Niobate (KNN)-based films have attracted attention thanks to excellent piezoelectric properties, as shown by sputtering (Shibata et al., Applied Physics Express, 2008) and more recently by Pulsed Lased Deposition technique (Huajun Liu et al., Science 2020). Several groups have investigated Chemical Solution Deposition (CSD) of KNN, which have not reached properties as competitive as the ones from lead-based films (Kovacova et al. J. Appl. Phys. 2021). At LIST, we have been working on piezoelectric films by CSD method since 2014, from the material synthesis up to the fabrication of actual devices, such as haptic actuators (Glinsek et al., Adv. Funct. Mat. 2020). CSD is interesting because it is cost-effective and a readily scalable method. It also enables rapid composition modifications in comparison with sputtering or PLD. Therefore, we intend to investigate further the potential of KNN-based films processed by CSD. 

In this project, the post doc will prepare Potassium Sodium Niobate (KNN) films by Chemical Solution Deposition method. The composition and microstructures of the fabricated films will be investigated via state-of-the-art characterization tools such as SIMS, XPS, SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, and XRR, all available at LIST. A special focus will be performed on electrical behaviour including dielectric, impedance spectroscopy, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and pyroelectric characterizations. Finally, these films will be integrated in a vibrating energy harvester, such as the one published in (Godard et al., Cell report Physical Science, 2020). All these tasks will be managed by the posdoctoral researcher.

You hold a PhD degree in Materials Science, Physics or Chemistry. 

Additionally, you have: 

  • A proven track record in science (publications and/or patents)
  • Ideally, a demonstrated experience in the fabrication of ceramic films
