You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The internship position will assist our ongoing investigations in MRT Department (Fiber based Composites and Interfaces). This project focuses on the development and investigation of surface covering, namely coating or sizing, for continuous fibres reinforcing composites. While being innovative for the industry, the surface treatment formulations evaluated in this subject is already very promising. We propose to synthesize a random amphiphilic copolymer containing dopamine, a hydrophilic monomer and (meth)acrylic functions. The synthesis of polydopamine by free radical polymerization requires multistep reactions to make dopamine acrylamide monomer. In this way, the student will:

  • develop new bio-inspired-based copolymers
  • use of the synthesized polymers as coatings onto the fiber
  • characterize the fiber surface and evaluate the efficiency of the designed solutions on composite materials.
