The IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department, with its 100 researchers and engineers, focuses on the digital transformation of operations in organizations with traditional environments and digital ecosystems, with the aim of improving their performance and innovation capacity. The common thread throughout ITIS is to develop the most efficient use of big data to ensure the most appropriate decision-making processes.

The Data Science & Analytics Unit (DSA) supports this digital transformation of our society and our economy by focusing on the interplay between people, data, computers and the physical world.

The Business Analytics Group of DSA focuses on leveraging business data value to drive enterprise performance, while adhering to a fact-based management approach. As a member of the Business Analytics group, you will primarily be responsible for driving research activities in the area of Trustworthy and Explainable AI. As part of your mission, you will contribute to BA/DSA’s roadmap and strategic positioning in XAI. 

EC’s Artificial Intelligence Act (April 21st, 2021), set an European approach for Trustworthy AI, introducing the first European AI Regulatory Framework. The upcoming European regulation will position Trustworthy AI as a necessary condition for AI to be used in practice, with Luxembourg already following on the main lines of the directive. Within the larger context of Trustworthy AI, the core research areas to consider mainly target AI Transparency (Explainable AI included), Fairness and Accountability. With as main objective to invent, design and assess AI-based Systems for Decision Making. Such systems need to be understandable (by experts and non-experts) and limit biases, while ensuring fair decisions, accountability and responsibility.


Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

Your role and main responsibilities include:

  • Execute, drive and valorize high-end research in the area of Trustworthy and Explainable AI; contribute to BA/DSA’s roadmap and long-term strategic positioning in Luxembourg / at the EU level;
  • Engage with the Business Analytics group and Group Leader to review strategic lines of development and positioning, provide expertise and contribute to defining and/or re-aligning, on an annual basis, the group’s roadmap. Sustain the group’s long-term vision and strategy in the Trustworthy/XAI area;
  • Integral to all aspects of the research lifecycle, with full autonomy in scoping, following and executing on a research agenda. Lead research activities, including on supervision, writing and submitting articles, patents, project proposals (as PI/co-PI or WP lead), monitoring the funding landscape and opportunities, involving with research networks, building consortia and applying for national and European competitive funding;
  • Disseminate knowledge and communicate on findings / analysis results via reports and presentations; build, run comparisons and/or technical reviews, showcase and document software demonstrators;
  • Actively scout for the latest AI/Ml and technology trends, track the evolution of the state-of-the-art w.r.t. technology and research, conduct literature surveys and write summary reports;
  • Work closely with both external and internal stakeholders to successfully design, implement and validate advanced analytics and AI/ML demonstrators and proof of concept solutions; recommend viable options based on factors like performance, infrastructure in place, or scenarios of application;
  • Connect to business application areas, e.g. Finance; extend research results to business applications, in close collaboration with engineers within the BA team or inside the department. Sustain and drive cross-functional interactions with other teams in LIST;
  • Experience in assetizing software components and coordinating with entities like LIST’s Technology Transfer Office is a plus, looking at options for licensing, patents and intellectual property.

The position connects to BA/DSA’s strategic alignment in the area of Trustworthy and Explainable AI, and is likely to link to future applications in, for example, Quantum Computing for Finance and AI (TensorFlow Quantum, IBM’s Qiskit, etc.).

We are looking for a Trustworthy AI Researcher with a strong track record of publications, and a genuine interest for applied research / technology and innovation transfer:

  • PhD in Computer Science (preferred) / Engineering / Mathematics (or other closely related fields), with a strong background in AI/ML research.
  • Strong background in AI/ML (Trustworthy AI or related topics, with a preference for Explainable AI and focus on Deep Learning). Solid understanding of mainstream models, e.g. CNNs, LSTMs, etc., with application in timeseries and image processing, but also in areas like NLP, using models such as BERT or GPT. Comfortable with training models, and techniques of transfer learning, working with adversarial networks, transformers, etc., and high-dimensional data analysis;
  • Strong track record of AI/ML-focused main-authored publications in prominent, top-tier journals (preferably in the area of Trustworthy AI);
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and generate novel ideas, concepts and solutions; strong interest in engaging in innovative, value-driven activities, able to involve with research networks and/or lead activities;
  • A genuine passion for innovation, motivation and experience in providing support for long-term AI/ML projects. Comfortable with operating at all levels of the AI/ML stack (collecting and curating data, process entanglement, querying, forming hypotheses, interpreting results, etc.);
  • Strong collaborative skills, result-oriented mindset, excellent organization and capacity to work in a dynamic, cross-functional environment;
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills (oral, written, presentation), including vs technical, management/executive and business audiences;


nice to have requirements
  • AI/ML experience outside the DL spectrum e.g. in advanced analytics, causal, continuous or reinforcement learning, GPs, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, error propagation, but also handling of semi-structured/unstructured data;
  • Experience in Visual Analytics, manipulating Knowledge Graphs, inference, or working with models / libraries for KG embeddingss;
  • Showcasing a proven competency in managing and/or leading RDI projects, being autonomous and motivating people;
  • Having previous experience in a business/industry-facing environment, showing a track record of acquired projects in a competitive setup (EU/national programs, business development, etc.), and activity or membership within business networks in LU/EU, is a strong plus. Any previous grants, awards, fellowships, or patents;
  • Any previous experience and/or involvement with actions linked to standardization, working with inter/national regulatory authorities;.
  • Knowledge of Python/R (including classical libraries and tools for data processing, ML, etc.), and working with large datasets using, for example, Spark; competency in any other language, like SQL, Matlab, Java/Javascript, bash scripting, etc.;
  • Strong knowledge of classical AI/ML paradigms, frameworks and technologies. Hands-on proven experience in working with e.g. TensorFlow, Keras or PyTorch. Experience in managing Git or any other version control tools/practice;
  • Experience with developing and architecting large-scale software solutions over cloud-based platforms like IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure, SAP Cloud Platform, Google Cloud Platform, etc..
