Welcome

You are about to start your application process for:

M-21101 - GROUP LEADER – MATERIALS FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING

M-21101 - GROUP LEADER – MATERIALS FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You ‘d like to contribute as a researcher? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech technology infrastructures, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing; serving both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

Quantum Computing Technologies (QCT) constitute a complex and rapidly evolving field, with significant advances occurring on a monthly basis. In MRT, we intend to launch an ambitious initiative on QCT by setting a new group dedicated to engineered defects in wide bandgap semiconductors (WBGSCs). These defects should be optically active and interact with each other in order to produce the desired entangled states and to manipulate them.

MRT has experts on growth of a wide range of materials, as well as experience in ion implantation. MRT also has experience on WBGSCs and particularly on oxides and on theoretical simulation tools to predict their properties, including the behavior of defects. WBGSCs are also promising materials for Quantum sensing applications, which should lead to additional activities in the group and in the department.

The new group leader will have to set up the activities by taking advantage of MRT’s assets, such as our clean room equipped with world class equipment (ALD, CVD, lithography, metal deposition, patterning advanced technologies), characterization labs on optical and electrical properties and a world class characterization platform with its experts on SIMS, XPS, XRD, SEM and TEM together with unique capabilities of prototyping complex systems.

The new group leader will be in charge of setting up not only the lab and its future activities of the lab, but also the recruitment and management of future young or established researchers.

As Group Leader, you are responsible – in accordance with your Head of Unit – for the overall management, coordination, development and performance of your group. In this framework, your main missions are:

Define and Implement the group’s strategy:

  • Define and propose, to the Head of Unit, an RDI strategy for the group, aligned with the unit and MRT strategies and with LIST’s missions as an RTO;
  • Ensure the implementation of the RDI group’s strategy and business plan;
  • Ensure that the RDI group’s contribution to the Nanotechnology unit’s performance indicators is achieved;
  • Increase the impact and visibility of the group’s and unit’s RDI domain at the European level.

Manage the group:

  • Take the lead on overall management, coordination and performance follow-up on the research group;
  • Lead a multicultural and multidisciplinary team of researchers and create a stimulating and satisfying work environment within the group, assume the operational responsibility of the group’s human resources;
  • Manage the portfolio of associated projects and activities related to the group;
  • Guarantee the professional execution of the RDI projects of the group;
  • Lead the definition of large-scale research and technology projects as Principal Investigator and manage it, in particular within EU programs and with industry;
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration with other RDI groups of the department;
  • Be hierarchically the person responsible for the group members and assume the operational responsibility of the group’s human resources;
  • Ensure the financial follow-up of the group’s performances;
  • Assist the Head of Unit in reporting tasks and other administrative activities.

 Ensure the group’s dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RDI results:

  • Develop the valorisation of the group’s outcome in terms of publications, patents, licenses, prototypes production, spin-offs;
  • Develop external collaborations, partnerships and networks.

 Expand scientific excellence and technological watch:

  • Besides these responsibilities and missions, as Group Leader, you shall continue to build your scientific and technological knowledge and directly contribute to projects relying on your high level of expertise.
