Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

At LIST we are actively addressing challenges of environmentally friendly power generation. Our group has solid knowledge of piezoelectric films both ceramics and polymers and makes energy harvesting prototypes (see for instance Godard et al., 1-mW vibration energy harvester based on a cantilever with printed polymer multilayers, Cell Reports Physical Science, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.xcrp.2020.100068 and Godard et al., On the importance of pyrolysis for inkjet-printed oxide piezoelectric thin films, J. Mater. Chem. C, https://doi.org/10.1039/C9TCO5228C. Polymer-based vibration energy harvesters are inexpensive to fabricate because they do not require high sintering temperatures. Screen printing is one of the techniques enabling deposition of polymer thick films and multilayers, required in the case of efficient energy harvesters. This tool enables convenient, repeatable deposition on large surfaces. This is what we are going to study during this internship.


Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The traineeship will start with the fabrication and electrical characterizations of screen-printed PVDF copolymer films and multilayers. Besides the fabrication of functional piezoelectric multilayers, the master student will be involved in dimensioning of a transducer resonating at frequency that matches an ambient vibrational source (<100 Hz), as well as fabrication of the transducer and integration of the active piezoelectric layer into the transducer. The trainee will also perform basic power measurements in order to determine maximum power outputs and quality factors of the assembled harvester. If time allows, this harvester will be used to supply electric energy to a communication module.
