II-2201 – INTERNSHIP IN DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLAINABLE AI METHODS FOR FAIR PRINCIPLES

II-2201 – INTERNSHIP IN DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLAINABLE AI METHODS FOR FAIR PRINCIPLES

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our IT for Innovation Services department

The IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department, with its 100 researchers and engineers, focuses on the digital transformation of operations in organizations with traditional environments and digital ecosystems, with the aim of improving their performance and innovation capacity. The common thread throughout ITIS is to develop the most efficient use of big data to ensure the most appropriate decision-making processes.

The department relies on the Data Analytics Platform: a hybrid infrastructure covering the entire range of data analytics activities. The platform is based on three pillars: a high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, a cognitive analytics pillar and an interactive visualization wall (Viswall).

The successful candidate will join the ADAPT research group, which focuses on Knowledge-based Context-Aware Adaptive Systems, in the DSA unit. The intern will be integrated in our multidisciplinary team and will benefit from the interaction and advice from the other team members and from our research partners. In parallel, our research environment encourages the spirit of initiative and autonomy, so the intern will be given the possibility to develop his/her own ideas to progress the project.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

This work will develop XAI (Explainable Artificial Intelligence) methods to explain the evaluation of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles associated with datasets.

The FAIR principles intend to provide guidelines to improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse of digital assets. The principles emphasize machine-actionability (i.e., the capacity of computational systems to find, access, interoperate, and reuse data with none or minimal human intervention) because humans increasingly rely on computational support to deal with data as a result of the increase in volume, complexity, and creation speed of data. But the principles are abstract and allow several interpretations of how to evaluate them. The tools that were developed to evaluate the FAIR principles (https://www.f-uji.net/index.php; https://fair-checker.france-bioinformatique.fr/base_metrics; https://fairsharing.github.io/FAIR-Evaluator-FrontEnd) are limited in the way they communicate with users about the results of their analysis, for instance, why a criterium failed and how to correct this problem. That's why we need XAI.

XAI includes a set of methods designed to interpret the reasoning behind a decision and to present it in an understandable format for humans and machines. Since the FAIR principles have been adopted in many public and private organizations, it becomes necessary to provide clear explanations about the evaluation criteria adopted and about the reasons that made a principle fail the test.

In this context, the trainee will have to:

  • Study the FAIR principles and the criteria adopted to evaluate them,
  • You will use and extend an existing software to perform evaluation of resources and identify failing criteria,
  • Study and select XAI methods that can be applied to this problem,
  • Implement XAI methods that generate understandable explanations for humans and machines,
  • Propose actions that can correct the failures.

The final application has to be implemented within an existing RESTful API based on Python (FastAPI) and MongoDB

The development of the existing application is at it's beginning, so the codebase is well documented, simple to take over and using modern technologies.

The features added to the software has to be fully documented.
