You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

The selected candidate will join ERIN’s Environmental Policies group (EPS), a research group of the Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) research unit. The EPS group aims to contribute to a better control of environmental risks and the development towards a tox-free, circular and sustainable society via science based support to the definition, implementation and evaluation of environmental policies at national and EU level and regulatory support for RDI at the interface of science, technologies and policies.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC) of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology is an open innovation facility for the development of bio-based products and processes of industrial interest, new biorefinery concepts for more efficient and sustainable processes, and new technologies for the detection and treatment of environmental pollution. The centre also offers facilities for process upscaling and can host companies for Joint Labs.

As part of the EPS group, the trainee will analyse the regulatory landscape and upcoming (policy) developments in the field of GreenTech, linked with the commercialisation of new molecules issued from research carried out at LIST. The start point will be the GTIC strategy and the accompanying market study. Moreover, the trainee will conduct desktop research into and review the (EU) policy documents and concrete legislation relevant to selected activity areas of the GTIC (e.g. cosmetics, biostimulants, biocontrol/biopesticides). The outcome will be (i) a mapping report of the relevant pieces of legislation and support documents, their respective requirements and main challenges applying to the commercialisation of new biobased products, (ii) the development of a policy paper summarising current policy developments and identifying main policy actors, (iii) training with and use of the PolicyCompass as a desktop research tool to screen the legislations (optional outcome).

In addition, the trainee will learn about the ongoing and future projects of the GTIC. The intern will get a comprehensive overview of the policies related to the biobased products and processes and the future policy developments in the EU. At the end of the internship, the intern will have a good understanding of the science and policy interface in the field of biobased products.
