You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

In the framework of past and ongoing projects, the BEAP-Belvaux Pole has developed a number of analytical methods for the determination of organic contaminants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, estrogenic compounds, etc.). These methods are based on Liquid Chromatography coupled to tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and, more recently, on LC coupled to High-Resolution MS (LC-HRMS). Due to the ever-growing number of compounds of interest and of their respective degradation products, many different methods have been progressively implemented in our labs, based on generic analytical conditions (essentially stationary and mobile phase properties). In addition, significant progresses have been recently made on column chemistries, that offer now interesting properties for the retention of challenging compounds, such as polar pesticides or metabolites.

The primary objective of the internship is to perform a general update of our LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS analytical methods for organic contaminants in water, comprising a maximum of target compounds. To that purpose, different LC columns will be tested and compared, as well as different mobile phases and gradient conditions. In addition, the optimisation of sample preparation procedures by Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) will be performed.

A second objective will be the implementation of a common database including the details of each analyte, the investigated LC and MS parameters, as well as the corresponding analytical performance (e.g., limits of quantification, extraction yields).
