You ‘d like to contribute as a Researcher? Join our IT for Innovation Services department

The IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department, with its 100 researchers and engineers, focuses on the digital transformation of operations in organizations with traditional environments and digital ecosystems, with the aim of improving their performance and innovation capacity. The common thread throughout ITIS is to develop the most efficient use of big data to ensure the most appropriate decision-making processes.

The department relies on the Data Analytics Platform: a hybrid infrastructure covering the entire range of data analytics activities. The platform is based on three pillars: a high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, a cognitive analytics pillar and an interactive visualization wall (Viswall).

Our world is becoming increasingly digital. Vast amounts of data about how individuals and groups behave, how machines and equipment work, and how the environment evolves are collected every day. The Data Science & Analytics Unit (DSA) supports this digital transformation of our society and our economy by focusing on the interplay between people, data, computers and the physical world.

The Visualization (VISU) Group of DSA focuses on leveraging the impressive human visual capabilities to gain insight into large complex data, to understand models and to take informed decisions. The team adopts the visual analytics paradigm in which a mix of visualization techniques are combined with various advanced analytics methods in user-friendly applications.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The VISU group has developed strong expertise in visual analytics for graph/network data, high dimension and mixed data as well as text data for applications like industry 4.0, automotive, health or life sciences. We’d like to further develop our portfolio of activities in these sectors and to grow in complementary application fields in particular finance, smart cities/regions, and edutechs. Our ambition is to imagine generic methodologies, approaches and techniques that can be transferable across application domains.

In the context of the upcoming regulation on Trustworthy AI, we also foresee visualization as a powerful mean to provide explanations of AI models and outcomes. Therefore, the VISU group is developing synergies with the AI-centered groups of the DSA Unit. For instance, the question of biases is present both in AI and in visualization and it should be jointly considered in the Trustworthy AI paradigm.

Visualization is also closely related to Human-Computer Interaction. When it is required, the VISU group is therefore joining its forces with HCI experts of other groups from the DSA unit who are specialized in User experience (UX), Human Factors and Augmented/Mixed Reality (AR/MR).

You should be a recognized researcher in your field with a documented footprint in the scientific community. Your main mission will be to promote RD&I activities and recognition within the Visualization group and the DSA unit by acquiring funding, managing large RD&I projects and maintaining / further developing your profile in the relevant scientific and technological communities.

You will lead the definition, and manage as PI, national and international RD&I projects of high complexity as well as multiannual and/or multidisciplinary RD&I projects.

You will additionally lead and promote the dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RD&I results (patents, licenses, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences) and publish scientific results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals or conferences. Such efforts should be performed in strong collaboration with other members of the VISU group, the DSA unit and the department and will contribute to the development of Research & Technology activities in LIST. Moreover, you will actively contribute to the development of scientific and technological cooperation networks at the national and international level.

You should have an outstanding academic background and a very strong record of accomplishments as far as publications and project management are concerned. Significant experience with application-oriented research is an asset including collaboration(s) with industry and transfer of RD&I results to public and/or private partners. Experience organizing and/or participating in multilateral research consortia (such as EU projects) would be a great advantage for this function.
