The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

Within the ERIN department, the ‘Environmental Sensing and Modelling’ (ENVISION) unit contributes to this mission by carrying out impact-driven research, geared towards monitoring, forecasting and predicting environmental systems’ responses to global change. An interdisciplinary team of around 50 scientists, engineers, post-docs and PhD candidates is developing new environmental process understanding, alongside new tools and technologies – operating at high spatial and temporal scales.

Embedded in the ENVISION unit, the ‘Catchment and eco-hydrology’ (CAT) research group has its efforts focusing on a holistic understanding of intrinsically coupled ecological, hydrological and human systems. At the CAT group we rely on our competences in (eco-)hydrology, geochemistry, plant and vegetation science, sedimentology, and environmental systems engineering for gaining a better understanding of eco-hydrological processes controlling hydrological and biogeochemical cycles, vegetation and sediment dynamics, pollutant fate and mitigation, and ecosystem resilience.

This vacancy with the CAT group is to support the development of a national water resources intelligence – for building a country more resilient to environmental change. Recent catastrophic weather events in Luxembourg and the Greater Region have shown that physical assets, as well as agro- eco- and hydro-systems, are increasingly under threat of shifts in seasonal climatic patterns, including extreme hydro-meteorological events.


How will you contribute?

With your colleagues at the ENVISION unit, you will help understanding climate risk and factoring it – together with stakeholders – into a national strategy, as well as day-to-day operations. Beside advancing general scientific understanding and hydrological model development, you will place at the disposal of decision makers climate, (flash-)flood and drought intelligence based on cutting-edge scientific data and evidence. You will leverage collaborations with international and national authorities and stakeholders – wiring this intelligence into the DNA of decision makers as a prerequisite for the long-term success of policies and investments. Your contributions to an improved understanding and projection of water futures will help our partners to navigate safely and thrive sustainably in an increasingly uncertain future.

You will be part of an international team of researchers, engineers, and PhD candidates. More specifically, you will contribute to our mission and objectives by:

  • Gathering and assessing climate, hydrological, eco-hydrological and hydro-geochemical data to enable environmental resources managers determine the extent of current and future effects of environmental change on natural resources, as well as on our society and economy.
  • Leveraging interdisciplinary knowledge on biogeochemical processes, solid-water interactions and environmental tracer techniques for developing, calibrating and validating innovative conceptual and mechanistic models (geared towards, e.g., the assessment, forecasting and projection of water quality, (flash-)floods & droughts).
  • Investigating the interplay of water and elemental cycles – spanning from water availability and its influence on CNP-balances in soils to the linked reactive transport via different flow components at catchment scale.
  • Coordinating and executing projects with local and international stakeholders – including ground- and surface water protection, assessments of climate change impacts on water resources, etc.
  • Securing external research funds to carry out fundamental and applied research projects related to the building of a national climate, flood and drought intelligence.
  • Contributing to PhD training and/or supervise PhD students.
  • Publishing high quality research articles in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Generating and protecting IP in the framework of research activities in or around the field of hydrological modelling (e.g., patents, licences).
  • Developing research partnerships and networks at national and international level.
  • Attending conferences and visit project partners.
  • Being an integral part of the life of the CAT research group by contributing to the groups’ development, and regularly communicating on your work progress during both technical and scientific meetings.

  • Hold a PhD in hydrology, eco-hydrology, hydro-geochemistry, hydrological modelling, or similar.
  • Have a proven 2 years or more of postdoctoral experience in the field of hydrological or landscape modeling, tracer hydrology, eco-hydrology, ecosystem processes, or related disciplines.
  • Made strong publication and/or patent track-record, commensurate with the career stage.
  • Showed skillset complementary to the existing research portfolio of the ERIN/ENVISION/CAT group.
  • Demonstrated a robust understanding of fundamental catchment functions of water and matter collection, storage, mixing and release.
  • Expressed a genuine interest in hydrological modelling (e.g., specificities of (flash-)flood modelling).
  • Have experience in the latest developments in time variant catchment transit time distributions and/or water stable isotopes in eco-hydrological research.
  • Embodies team working spirit and the LIST values.
  • Have been working with Python, R or any equivalent software
  • Have excellent communication skills in english that helps you interacting with colleagues, managers, partners and a lay audience. Any other language skills are considered as assets
