The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.


The selected candidate will join the recently established Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit and will in particular be involved in developing solutions based on power electronics for modern energy systems. 


The ICES research unit aims to develop ground-breaking market-oriented solutions in the ways in which energy is generated, distributed and consumed, meeting the challenge of cutting greenhouse-gas emissions, ensuring energy security, planning feasible business models and socially outreach advances. Central to the ICES unit is the smart grid vision, namely, an electricity network in which information flows freely between consumers and suppliers, and demand adapts in real-time in response to the continuously changing supply from intermittent renewable sources. 

The ICES unit however extends this vision toward a wider energy portfolio, integrating other energy infrastructures together to electricity, and providing further abstraction and intelligence levels in the conception of solutions for both planning and operating the energy systems of the future. Moreover, in addition to generate impacting solutions addressing society and market needs, this research unit will conduct fundamental research aiming ground-breaking disclosers to remove barriers and introduce revolutionary concepts for planning, developing and operating the Intelligent Clean Energy Systems of the future.   

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

Technical profile

We are looking for a senior researcher with strong experience in power converters dominated power systems. 

The candidate should have a strong background in designing and controlling grid-connected power converters, with significant experience in applications such as FACTS, HDVC, wind/PV power conversion and grid converters for BESS and EV charging. 

The candidate should be able to define power converter design specifications for grid applications, leading the development of low-level controller enhancements (e.g. synchronization, current/voltage control, energy control, etc...). 

The candidate should have sound knowledge and experience based on past projects aimed to improve the interaction of power converters with the electrical grid, covering both design of high-level grid-oriented functionalities for power converters (e.g. grid forming or power oscillation damping functionalities), and analysing the behaviour of power grids with high penetration of power converters (e.g. using dynamic analysis and harmonics analysis) and the development of solutions for the improvement of grid stability, reliability and resilience. 

The candidate should be able to link the work on controlling systems based on grid-connected power converters with the optimal and safe operation of power systems. 

The successful candidate should have practical experience in conducting research, prototyping and developing real projects in collaboration with industry. 

The candidate should be proficient in the hardware and software tools commonly used by industry for developing grid-connected power converters and analysing their impact on the grid. In this sense, experience in working in real-time environments with HIL will be an asset.


Duties

The selected candidate will join the Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit and will work with a team of researchers and engineers focused on designing and controlling power converter dominated power systems. 

The selected candidate will boost the ICES unit capacity for controlling and operating power systems towards a new perspective, promoting system digitization.

The successful candidate will promote new projects and programs aimed at developing the digital power processing systems of the future, which will have advanced capabilities that will allow increasing renewable energy integration, system efficiency and response, and security of supply, as well as resilience based on a multitude of granular and distributed energy resources.  

The candidate will interact with other research and technology teams, particularly with specialists in power systems, computational intelligence, and computer and communication sciences, collaborating from the perspective of power processing in smart grids. 

The selected candidate will report directly to the ICES Head of Unit. 

The candidate will join the Active Power Grid (APG) group, developing new products and services, and promoting good practices among the team. To this end, we are looking for a senior research associate with 8+ years of experience in developing and transferring power electronics-based solutions for modern power systems, which might include HVDC multi-terminal grids, large renewable power plants, FATCS, energy storage, electric vehicles and flexible assets, among others, and making intensive use of digital technologies and data science methodologies.


You will be involved in:

  • Collaborating in accomplishing the ICES’ strategic plan.
  • Defining the APG’s annual research plan to meet objectives.
  • Promoting research projects and other initiatives to respond to public-funded programs and calls dealing with modern energy systems.
  • Engaging interaction with the energy value chain stakeholders to promote collaborative projects and services.
  • Promoting technology transfer and IP exploitation with industry.
  • Championing developments dealing with new research concepts, solutions and innovations for power electronics dominated power systems.
  • Promoting valuable knowledge generation in the APG group and in the ICES unit
  • Setting bridges with other disciplines, such as data science, computational science and economics.
  • Performing systematic updates on trends and opportunities based on state-of-the-art power electronics.
  • Managing RDI projects to achieve smooth progress and high-quality results.
  • Generating IP based on original research results and methodologies.
  • Promoting a collaborative atmosphere among the team and strengthening multidisciplinary research.
  • Preparing research and technology training activities. 
  • Promoting dissemination of research results in top-ranked scientific journals, conferences, and media.
  • Promoting dissemination, valorisation, and transfer of RDI results (patents, licences, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences).
  • Presenting the research conducted in the field of power electronics dominated power systems at workshops, seminars, and other technical events.
  • Developing a scientific and industrial network by setting ties and collaborations with recognized institutions and companies in the field of modern power systems

You hold a PhD degree in Power Electronics integrated in power systems with a strong track record of publications, and a genuine interest for applied research/technology and innovation transfer. You should be a recognized researcher in your field with a documented footprint in the scientific community.

As you will integrate a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that is strongly project and team oriented, you should be comfortable securing funding and managing a sustainable project portfolio ranging from fundamental to industrial / application-oriented research,


You also have: 

  • Proven experience in managing RDI projects and you have supervised PhD students;
  • Strong background in designing and controlling grid-connected power conversion systems, with significant experience in FACTS, HDVC, wind/PV power conversion, BESS, and EV charging.
  • Experience in developing both low-level controllers and high-level functionalities to enhance interaction of power converters with electrical grids.
  • Solid knowledge and experience in analysing the impact of power converters in power systems, particularly using dynamic analysis and harmonics analysis.
  • Experience in low-level development environments for MCU (e.g. TI C2000), HIL platforms (e.g. Typhoon, OPAL-RT, RTDS) and programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python,…)
  • Experience with power systems analysis tools (e.g. DIgSILENT. PSS/E, Neplan,…)
  • Experience in distributed controllers based on communication technologies (Internet, tunnelling, Ethernet,…) and protocols (e.g. IEC61850, IEC 101-104, ModBus,…) used in power systems.
  • Strong collaborative skills, result-oriented mindset, excellent organization and capacity to work in a dynamic, cross-functional environment;
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills (oral, written, presentation), including vs technical, management/executive and business audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team across the ICES RDI unit.


  On top of that you are fluent in English (written and oral). Knowledge in at least one of the official languages of Luxembourg is an asset.

  • Experience organizing and/or participating in multilateral research consortia (such as EU projects);
  • Significant experience with application-oriented research including collaboration(s) with industry and transfer of RD&I results to public and/or private partners. 
  • Strong track record of acquired projects in a competitive setup (EU/national programs, business development, etc.), experience in a business/industry-facing environment;
  • Knowledge in intellectual property rights and track record in patenting
