ES-2217 - R&T ASSOCIATE IN MICROWAVE SINTERING FOR ISRU

The European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC) is a joint initiative of the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). ESRIC aims to become an internationally recognized centre of expertise for scientific, technical, business and economic aspects related to the use of space resources for human and robotic exploration, as well as for a future in-space economy. 


You will be part of ESRIC and supported by Maana Electric

ESRIC is a brand-new initiative with challenging objectives and evolving in a rapidly changing international environment. For this project, which is supported by ESA, ESRIC is partnering with Maana Electric a Luxembourgish company specialized in developing and implementing ISRU technologies, both for terrestrial and lunar cases. Maana Electric has already carried out several ISRU projects with affinities with the present activity and will provide technical support to the candidate

This project will be conducted both at Maana Electric as well as at ESRIC in Luxembourg. The candidate will be supported by experts from Maana Electric and ESRIC and additional support may come from the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) and the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC).

Responsibilities

You will design, build, and evaluate an experimental demonstrator to use microwave sintering technologies to process regolith simulants. The expected tasks shall be:

  • Review the available solutions for microwave sintering from In Situ Resources,
  • Develop a baseline process architecture for the processing of lunar regolith,
  • Design and build a technology demonstrator,
  • Integrate the demonstrator in Maana’s and/or ESIRC’s ground based ISRU environment,
  • Validate and measure the performance of the demonstrator,
  • Manufacture and characterise products from lunar regolith simulants.


must have requirements
  • PhD in Materials Science and/or Mechanical Engineering with a strong background in experimental set-up and operations,
  • Experience in microwave sintering technologies is required,
  • A first experience in lunar geology and lunar regolith is desired,
  • Understanding of ISRU paradigm is desired,
  • Experience in design and integration of experimental setups is an asset,
  • Flexible and able to adapt,
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Excellent command of English is a must, French will be considered an asset.
