The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. You ‘d like to contribute as a Policy Support Engineer? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

How will you contribute?

The selected candidate will join the Environmental Policies group (EPS), a research group which is part of the Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) research unit of ERIN. The EPS group aims to contribute to the development towards a tox-free, circular and sustainable society via science-based support to the definition, implementation and evaluation of environmental policies at national and EU level (in particular policies around chemicals, (de)construction & waste, (industrial) installations, and soil) and regulatory support for RDI at the interface of science, technologies and policies. Typical outcomes of the group are (IT) tools, methods and guidelines for companies and authorities, regulatory expertise (opinions, reports, analyses, contribution of (EU) fora), helpdesk (high reactivity support) and knowledge transfer (events, platforms).

As part of the team, the candidate will particularly focus on the group’s activities around chemicals policies:

  • Pro-actively inform Luxembourgish companies about their regulatory obligations via events, publications and the REACH&CLP and POPs Websites (reach.lu, pop-chemicals.lu) and answer to their concrete questions
  • Raise supplier awareness in Europe on their obligations around substances of high concern (SVHCs) in articles and raise consumer awareness enabling them to make responsible purchasing decisions (askreach.eu)
  • Exchange with national and international actors, e.g., via the network of the Member States’ helpdesks and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)

To fulfil these tasks, the candidate will build, based on technical and scientific expertise, regulatory competences on chemicals legislation, substitution of hazardous chemicals, safe use of chemicals, and selected product groups such as nanomaterials, plastics, etc. Moreover, the selected applicant will benefit from the expertise of colleagues and will be trained on specific related topics.
