Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

 

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?


The postdoctoral position will focus on the creation of an aligned and hierarchical cellulose based reinforcement for continuous fiber 3D printing. The challenge of this research is to develop a method for electrospinning cellulose derivatives with high content of nanocellulose, and to develop a production line method for cellulose regeneration of electrospun fibers.

This position is in the frame of the M-ERA.NET funded project BioCel3D (Cellulose from waste and bacteria in electro-spinning for continuous fibre reinforced 3D printed composites), in partnership with KU Leuven (Belgium), Graz University of Technology (Austria), and University of Maribor (Slovenia).

In addition to scientific support by recognized experts in the field, the candidate will have access to fully equipped labs for advanced micromechanical characterization and fiber composite manufacturing. Their efforts will be aided by state-of-the-art characterization facilities, including relevant spectrometric (FTIR, NMR, XPS, MALDI) and chromatographic (GPC) tools, structural characterization methods (SEM, AFM, microCT), thermal analysis equipment (TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, etc.), mechanical (quasi-static tensile, flexural, micro pull-out, nano indentation, etc.) and physical testing (contact angle). The candidate will have the opportunity of a secondment in a partnership university, as well as participation in international conferences.

You hold a PhD in chemistry science/engineering or a related discipline (materials science, physics, etc.) with a strong experimental background in polymer chemistry and surface engineering, especially on cellulosic based materials, as demonstrated by first author-publications in Q1 journals. Experience with electrospinning is highly desirable and then will be considered as an important asset (also proved by publication in this field). Finally, you are fluent in English.
