Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

 


Responsibilities

How will you contribute?


The successful candidate will work on a four-year-long project focused on developing a new method of designing mechanical structures made of new fiber-reinforced vitrimer composites with a focus on repairability and fiber recycling / reuse. The research project aims to develop and validate “design-for-repair” methodologies for fiber-reinforced vitrimer composite structures. The benefits of these constructions are seen primarily in the significantly increased cost-effectiveness of construction, reduced energy consumption and minimized environmental impact.

The candidate will design a selected vitrimer composite structure with repairability in mind, determine typical failure modes, define and implement repair methods and test the structures before and after repair. For structural analyses, approaches based on analytical or numerical methods will be employed. Design exploration methods (finite element coupled with statistical / probabilistic methods) will be used to analyze construction strength variations and identify critical parameters. Computational modelling methods will be employed to find numerical solutions for reliable and optimized repairs. Subsequent laboratory tests will verify the developed numerical and analytical methods and yield reliable tools for evaluating the durability of such constructions.

In addition to scientific support from recognized experts in the field, the candidate will have access to fully equipped labs, including fiber composites prototyping and mechanical testing. This complementary combination of theoretical analyses and laboratory testing applied to a real industrial use case will provide a complelling demonstration of the relevance and utility of the research.

You hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering / Lightweight Engineering & Composites or a related field and wish to carry out impactful, high-quality experimental research in collaboration with diverse colleagues. You are interested in computer simulations, testing, and validation processes. You enjoy learning new things, using your creativity to solve problems, and taking advantage of opportunities to build your skills. You’re used to communicating effectively in English, both in writing and orally, and documenting your work (minimum certified B2 level). You are careful, conscientious and well organized in the lab, happy to work with others and motivated to make a difference in what you do.
