You are about to start your application process for:

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You’d like to contribute as a researcher? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

How will you contribute?

There is an increasing demand for materials to be recyclable, especially composite materials and other structures that are difficult to recycle. As a consequence, there is a clear need for a more forward-thinking approach that addresses a new generation of composite materials designed with repair, reuse and recycling (not downcycling) in mind. This calls especially for developing new debonding solutions for bonded composite structure materials. However, it is extremely challenging to incorporate debonding-on-demand features into an adhesive system. In this context, the main objective of this project is to develop a new debonding-on-demand technology based on an inspired intumescent-based concept in order to disassemble bonded composite structures.

We are looking for a Master Student who will strongly contribute to this ambitious project through the development of innovative debonding-on-demand technology. The first task will be dedicated to the development of new formulations to debond structural composites at suitable temperatures. Several approaches will be used in order to incorporate intumescent particles in the adhesive without degrading the adhesive joint properties. Various morphologies and formulations will be defined and elaborated. Then, in-depth characterization of the debonding phenomena triggered by the modified adhesive will be investigated to reveal relevant structure-properties / performance relationships. In addition to scientific support by recognized experts in the field, the candidate will have access to fully equipped labs for fiber composite preparation. Their efforts will be aided by state of the art characterization facilities, including relevant spectrometric (FTIR, NMR, XPS, MALDI) tools, structural characterization methods (SEM, AFM, microCT), thermal analysis equipment (TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, etc.), mechanical (quasi-static tensile, flexural, etc.) and physical testing (contact angle).
