The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

 


Responsibilities

How will you contribute?


The Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation department (ERIN) of LIST is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies, practical methods and outreach activities for the simulation and comprehensive sustainability assessment of socio-economic systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable eco-innovation, through products and technologies, as well as support sustainability-oriented policy implementation and behavioural change to promote decarbonisation transitions.

Within the SUSTAIN Unit, the applicant will be incorporated in the Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (LCSA) research group. The group consists of ca. 20 researchers developing sustainability metrics and indicators, to assess the environmental and social impacts of products, technologies, territories and policies, with industries and policy makers.

 

You will work as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analyst for multiple projects in collaboration with external partners, from industries or public organizations.

You will have an active role in two types of activities:


  • Performing LCA studies of products, services or organisations, following ISO 14040/44 and other relevant standards,
  •  Developing environmental product declaration (EPD) of products.

 

Main duties will be to run, under the supervision of experienced researchers, LCA studies of products and technologies in different sectors, e.g. construction materials, health services and consumer goods.

 

You will have to closely interact with external partner(s) to carry out the evaluation. You could also be asked to contribute to research projects, such as the development of LCA tools or new methodological approaches.

You hold a Master’s degree in environmental science or engineering with specialization in LCA or equivalent.

 

You have technical skills such as:

  • Good knowledge of LCA methodology and standards
  • Good knowledge of LCA software such as SimaPro, GaBi or OpenLCA
  • Basic knowledge of industrial processes
  • Programming skills and proficiency with Brightway2 would be assets
  • Proven organizational skills and interdisciplinary thinking, a problem-solving mind-set, and a strong team-working capability, but is also able to work in autonomy and creatively.


Finally, a flawless knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required.

The knowledge of German and/or French and/or Luxembourgish is considered as an asset.
