You ‘d like to contribute as research engineer? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The selected candidate will join its Environmental Policies group (EPS), a research group of the Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) research unit of ERIN. The EPS group aims to contribute to the development towards a tox-free, circular and sustainable society via science-based support to the definition, implementation and evaluation of environmental policies at national and EU level (in particular policies around chemicals, soil, (de)construction & waste, (industrial) installations) and regulatory support for RDI at the interface of science, technologies and policies. Typical outcomes of the group are (IT) tools, methods and guidelines for companies and authorities, regulatory expertise (opinions, reports, analyses, contribution of (EU) fora), helpdesk (high reactivity support) and knowledge transfer (events, platforms).

As part of the team, the candidate will particularly focus on the group’s activities around soil protection and chemicals policies:

  • Support Luxembourgish authorities in the definition and implementation of soil legislation, especially in the field of contaminated sites, and provide scientific expertise to the further development of soil policies / soil protection, e.g. by the derivation and application of science-based decision criteria / methodologies / assessments, and the identification of potentially soil polluting (professional) activities and sites. Also contribute to the network of LIST’s different activities around soil protection.
  • Contribute to the group’s activities around the management and evaluation of hazardous chemicals, e.g. pro-actively inform Luxembourgish companies about their regulatory obligations via events, publications and the REACH&CLP and POPs Websites (reach.lu, pop-chemicals.lu), exchange with national and international actors, e.g. via the Risk Management and Evaluation (RiME+) platform of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and provide regulatory expertise to LIST’s RDI activities.
  • Contribute to the execution and management of projects or project work packages in the above fields of activities.

To fulfil these tasks, the candidate will build, based on her/his technical and scientific expertise, regulatory competences on soil protection and chemicals legislation and tools for their implementation. Moreover, the selected applicant will benefit from the expertise of her/his colleagues and will be trained on specific related topics.
