The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The department relies on two cutting-edge platforms, the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform and the Observatory for the Climate and the Environment, and the GreenTech Innovation Centre (GTIC): a one-stop-shop for the complete development of bio-based products and processes.

 


Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

 

The objective of this internship is to give an experience in microbiological and engineering techniques in the context of the anaerobic digestion process. The trainee will be primarily involved in the maintenance of anaerobic reactors aiming to enhance biological methane production and enrich microorganisms beneficial for resilience towards reactors acidification. Operation of bioreactors will be followed by the phenotypic and genetic characterization of main microorganisms. The role is suitable for a candidate with some basic experience in anaerobic digestion and/or microbiology. Main tasks include feed preparation, feeding of reactors and removal of digestate, sampling, DNA extraction and molecular characterization of the microbial community.

You are a Master student and on top of that, you have skills in areas like Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular biology and/or Biochemistry.

Consequently, you also have a good knowledge of English or French, you’re the one we’re looking for!
