You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

Global warming and energy crisis are pushing the society to develop alternative technologies to fossil fuels. Renewable hydrogen has been identified as one of the key future green technologies. As hydrogen production via electrolysis is energy consuming, a strong research effort has been made to develop more efficient production techniques. At LIST we defined photocatalysis as one of the priority areas. Ferroelectrics, on the other hand, are a class of materials that are used in different electronic devices, such as echography scanners, inkjet printers, haptics, etc. They possess spontaneous electric polarization, which can be coupled with catalytic reaction processes. This has been recently recognized as a new paradigm to tackle environmental problems.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

In the framework of this project, you will be mainly involved in:

  • Combining LIST’s existing knowledge on ferroelectrics and catalytic processes
  • Assessing the catalytic performance of previously developed Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and BiFeO3 materials
  • Sol-gel synthesis of nano-structured materials, their basic characterization (electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction) and measurements of their catalytic performance
