Responsibilities

The role sits within the 2LoD and will aim to facilitate and monitor the implementation of effective risk management practices, within their respective processing areas in conjunction with BIL’s change programme.

You must be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in joining BIL, have a good understanding of the concept of the 3LoD and how this translates into the operating environment, an excellent work ethic, with an innate can-do attitude and most importantly, have practical experience in environments that have gone through the challenges, of complex system migrations. 


You will be responsible for:

  • Briefing on a weekly basis, the Head of Operational Risk and the Risk Management COO in relation to the Operational Risk Management issues associated with BILs change programme,
  • Developing strong relationships with key stakeholders and business partners by addressing issues/concerns in timely manner,
  • Undertaking front to back, key risk assessments and operational risk reviews across BIL’s business units in relation to the strategic changes,
  • Provide credible challenge to the business on its decisions leading to the improvement of the control environment,
  • Provide input into the “Monthly Risk Dashboard”,
  • Be responsible for the development and implementation of ORM’s Indicator programme,
  • Assist with the implementation of the revised RCSA process,
  • Help with the development of meaningful, transparent, and credible management reports.

You will be required to communicate with a variety of stakeholders, including other members of the team, senior management, and other risk officers within the broader Risk department. Your inherent verbal and written communication skills to convey information about potential risks and how the organisation plans to mitigate them is key, in building relationships.


Risk management knowledge:

Risk management is the process by which organisations identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks. You should have a working knowledge of operational risk management practices, be able to identify risks and to communicate the underlying issues.  


Critical thinking:

Critical thinking is the ability to analyse a situation and determine the best course of action. You will be required to use your knowledge and experience as well as your inherent critical thinking skills to make decisions about how to mitigate risks and prevent potential losses.  


Problem-solving:

You will use your networking skills as well as your problem-solving skills to identify potential risks and to develop strategies to prevent them from occurring. You will also use these skills to identify potential issues and develop solutions to resolve them if they do occur.

Ideally, you will have a minimum of 5 years’ work experience, demonstrating a strong control-mindset obtained through a career in a large financial services firm, dealing with multiple stakeholders, in a changing environment. You are currently working in or are looking for a transition into an Operational Risk Management role which you can justify by demonstrating that you have the necessary knowledge, skills, mind-set, and experience to make the transition. 

You would have either led projects, or participated in large scale change programmes, where you have gained; practical experience dealing with the complexities of multiple stakeholders, implementation of complex processes, a deep understanding of how technology changes impact the business process and the end-user. Furthermore, you should understand the implications of “de-scoping” decisions and the resultant need for development of tactical solutions, the need for integrity of static data, issues and problems associated with data migration. Finally, exposure to, process change governance, UAT vetting, business readiness preparation and an appreciation of the operational risks associated with the aforementioned activities is key.

You will be fluent in English (writing essential) and be able to communicate in French, with the ability to build strong relationships within BIL, to help implement the Operational Risk agenda.

Having excellent interpersonal skills, you must be able to work both autonomously on specific assignments, as well as part of a team, with minimum supervision. Reporting directly to the Head of Operational Risk, you will work alongside other colleagues within the broader Risk Management function to provide credible challenge to the business, on their state of readiness in relation to BILs strategic agenda.  


Background:

  • You will have at minimum a bachelor’s degree in, Risk Management, or related field,
  • Understand business process and the concept of embedded business controls,
  • A strong knowledge of the principles of Operational Risk Management,
  • Good knowledge of front/back-office processes and procedures; and related controls,
  • Be able to learn on the fly, decompose complex issues and present information concisely,
  • You will not come from a Consulting back-ground.
