You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

Interfaces in composites play a key role in many areas such as automotive sector, technical textiles. This is particularly the case in polymer composites whose performances are mainly driven by the interface and interphase integrity. In this area, the challenge is to develop new approaches to improve interfacial adhesion between symmetric and dissymmetric materials and on the opposite to promote disassembly to fit to recycling issues.

Responsibilities

How will you contribute?

The project of this internship focuses on the development and investigation of surface covering, namely coating or sizing, for natural fibres reinforcing composites (focusing on bamboo). While being innovative for the industry, the surface treatment formulations evaluated in this subject is already very promising. We propose to develop new water-based surface treatments based on the elegant combination of bio-inspired materials to promote adhesion between the fiber and the matrix, as well as improving thermal stability of the fibre.

Within the framework of this internship, you will:

  • develop new bio-inspired-based polymers,
  • use of the synthesized polymers as coatings onto the fibre,
  • characterize the fibre surface and evaluate the efficiency of the designed solutions on composite materials.

Concerning the project follow-up, it will be asked to prepare a PowerPoint presentation that will be regularly updated with new results and presented to the supervising team. A final report and a final presentation will have to be prepared.
