Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.
The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.
Responsibilities
How will you contribute?
Several Energy devices are made partially of porous materials as electrodes that allow for flow of gases within the device, such as Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. The porosity architecture of the device’s electrodes plays an effect the flow of gases, heat transfer and current distribution within the device, which in turn alter the device energy conversion performances.
Your technical work will mainly cover the meshing of the porous material using a commercial software, as well as the simulation of the fluid flow and electric current governing equations within porous material.
The work will be organised as follow:
- Transform voxel format of the porosity architecture to STL file
- Surface Mesh rendering
- Finite element simulation of the fluid flow and electric current
- Prediction of the effective properties: Tortuosity, permeability, and much more!

You are currently completing a second-year master’s degree (Master 2) or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Materials, or Informatics and have knowledge in the following areas:
- Finite Elements methods
- Python programming
On top of that, you have a good command of English and/or French. You’re the one we’re looking for!
