You‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg. To support an ongoing project and the RDI lines of the MRT Hydrogen Roadmap, we are looking for technical support in the form of an internship.

How will you contribute?

Ion exchange films have attracted increasing interest as solid electrolytes for applications including water electrolysis, fuel cells, water treatment and related proton transport applications. However, ion exchange membranes (IEM) can often suffer from performance diminishing damage during use, thus the design of IEM that can restore original performance (e.g. via the introduction of certain stimuli) are important for the long durable, high performance use of electrochemical devices and ultimately reduce costs. Nafion membranes remain today as the reference material for membranes for the majority of electrochemical cells. However certain challenges remain to be addressed. This relates to certain performance reducing degradation mechanisms (e.g. free radical attack / oxidative damage).

In this respect, the intern will assist in an ongoing project on the synthesis of innovative block copolymer chemistries that enable the impact of IEM degradation to be reversed and thus recover any observed loss of ion conductivity. The influence of functionality, molecular weight and synthesis approach on the properties of IEMs will be investigated, with particular respect to phase separation behaviour, ion conductivity properties and ultimately self-healing behaviour.
