You’d like to contribute as a Postdoctoral Researcher? Join our IT for Innovation Services department

The IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department, with its 100 researchers and engineers, focuses on the digital transformation of operations in organizations with traditional environments and digital ecosystems, with the aim of improving their achievement and innovation capacity. The common thread throughout ITIS is to develop the most efficient use of big data to guarantee the most appropriate decision-making processes. The department relies on the Data Analytics Platform: a hybrid infrastructure covering the entire range of data analytics activities. The platform is based on three pillars: a high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, a cognitive analytics pillar and an interactive visualization wall (VisWall).

This Postdoc project is part of the Doctoral Training Unit “Deep Data Science for Digital History” (D4H). This interdisciplinary DTU focuses on multiple complex tasks at the intersection between the disciplines of history and data science. The DTU will train the latest generation of digitally literate PhD students to deal with “big data of the past” in a critical and competent way, combining traditional close reading with machine-based methods of distant reading (“scalable reading”). It aims to develop a shared understanding of the human/machine nexus in collecting, curating, managing, analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing historical data and to problematize the multi-layered temporalities of datasets and experiment with novel forms and formats of historical models and simulations in a longue-durée / deep time perspective.

How will you contribute?

Multilayer graphs (MLG) are more expressive than traditional single-mode graphs when it comes to modeling complex natural and social phenomena. In their most general form, MLG can capture various types of relationships between various types of entities. Hence, they provide a unifying formalism for a multitude of classes of graphs (e.g., dynamic, multiplex, multimodal graphs). Multilayer network visualization is a growing topic of research. New visualization and interaction methods are needed to bring the power of MLG to the toolset of domain experts of all genders.

In this project, you will develop new visualization methods to support the exploratory analysis of multilayer networks, including for example the comparative analysis of layers in an MLG and the interactive creation and manipulation of layers depending on the application domain problem at hand. You will have the opportunity to leverage LIST’s high-resolution visualization wall and other state-of-the-art interactive displays.

As a member of D4H, yoy will have an easy access to a multitude of data sets and stakeholders, in particular an interdisciplinary team of faculty members and PhD candidates with a keen interest in finding insights in the data.

Activities of the successful candidate:

  • Develop novel visualization methods and software;
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences;
  • Present papers at scientific conferences;
  • Take part in the DTU training activities and research workshops;
  • Participate in public history and outreach activities of LIST.
