How will you contribute?

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily work with focused ion beam (FIB)-based prototype instruments in combination with Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometers (SIMS) developed in-house.

You will coordinate with the project partners (DFKI) and adapt their codes for practical implementation and interfacing with the raster controls of the FIB-SIMS imaging platform. Hence, you should be comfortable with low-level programming as well as with adapting electronic hardware controls.

You will work towards demonstrating the proof of concept of the new SIMS image acquisition modalities. In consultation with the project leader, Dr. Santhana ESWARA, you will design and perform relevant experiments, analyse, and interpret the results, write scientific articles and disseminate the results in international conferences.

You will join the Advanced Instrumentation for Nano-Analytics (AINA) group within the MRT department at LIST.

AINA group is launching the OPINCHARGE project funded by the Horizon Europe program. Coordinated by LIST, it brings together 10 world-leading research and technology organizations across Europe. It aims to develop advanced characterization methods and tools to investigate solid-state interfaces in Li-ion batteries.

In this context, the AINA group is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to adapt and implement novel high-speed sparse image acquisition algorithms for advanced microscopy. With support from project partner German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), you will adapt and implement machine learning assisted microscopy data acquisition methods. Specifically, the conventional pixel-by-pixel raster data acquisition is not suitable for imaging radiation sensitive samples or for capturing transient processes. Hence, advanced scanning modes which involve sampling fewer pixels which are dynamically selected real-time with feedback from smart sampling algorithms are needed for low-dose and high-throughput imaging.

You will be trained by experienced scientists and will be given access to state-of-the-art infrastructure to perform cutting-edge research.

  • You hold a PhD degree in Physics or Engineering.
  • You have demonstrated experience in low-level programming and electronics control adaptations.
  • Ideally you should be familiar with electron or ion microscopy hardware (not mandatory).
  • You have a taste for experiments and have team-spirit.
  • You are fluent in English.
  • You have an interest in working with prototype instruments, desire to perform experiments with microscopy methods.
