IM-2329 INFRARED REFLECTING COATINGS FOR SOLAR-THERMAL ENERGY HARVESTING INTERNSHIP

IM-2329 INFRARED REFLECTING COATINGS FOR SOLAR-THERMAL ENERGY HARVESTING INTERNSHIP

Are you passionate about research? So are we!

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You’d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

How will you contribute?

Capturing the sun energy and converting it to heat is attractive, owing to the possibility to take benefit from the entire solar spectrum. When the generated solar heat leads to temperatures exceeding 1000K, it can be efficiently used for the electricity generation or for chemicals production (e.g., hydrogen or hydrocarbons as energy carrier). A bottleneck in the process is the availability of solar absorbers capable of operating efficiently at such high temperatures. Carbon-based coatings, such as carbon nanotubes, behave as a black body by capturing most solar radiation to generate heat. Nevertheless, they feature a substantial radiative heat loss.

During this internship you will contribute to the efforts of reducing the thermal emissivity of carbon-containing layers to increase their suitability for the solar-thermal energy harvesting. Hereby, you will implement vacuum chemical deposition techniques for the deposition of the coatings, and you will be involved is several characterization techniques prior the thermal emissivity measurement and thermal stability testing. You will be in charge of assessing the coating functionality with a home-made solar simulator to evaluate the materials performance.
