The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.
You‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Environmental Research and Innovation department
The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.
How will you contribute?
Land surface temperature (LST) indicates the thermal status of land surface as a consequence of the land-atmosphere exchange of energy and water fluxes. It is immensely sensitive to soil water content variations and carries the imprints of surface water stress. Meanwhile, LST is also affected by atmospheric demand for water through evaporative cooling. As with the drying and warming climate under global change, accurate retrieval of LST at a high spatio-temporal resolution is a pressing need. In this case, multiple high-resolution thermal infrared (TIR) missions including ESA’s Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LSTM), the Franco-Indian joint Thermal infraRed Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural resource Assessment (TRISHNA), and NASA’s Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) are planned, which will facilitate LST mapping and its subsequent applications in agriculture, ecosystem, and urban thermal environment among the others.
The ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS), positioned on the International Space Station (ISS) on 29 June 2018, is a pathfinder for the future TIR missions. It collects thermal images in five bands between 8 and 12.5 μm with a high spatio-temporal resolution at varying times of the day. The spatial coverage is between ±52° latitude over the globe. The pixel size after resampling at the nadir is ~70 × 70 m. The average revisit time is approximately 1-5 days, depending on the latitude. The high spatio-temporal resolution ECOSTRESS data provide an unprecedented opportunity for monitoring terrestrial ecosystems with largely improved spatial detail and timeliness.
You will be mainly in charge of:
- ECOSTRESS Collection data preparation
- Implementation of LST retrieval algorithms on ECOSTRESS data
- Evaluation of the retrieved ECOSTRESS LST by comparing against in-situ measurements and the other alternative ECOSTRESS LST products.
