You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

How will you contribute?

You will assist our ongoing investigations in MRT Department (Fibre based Composites and Interfaces). This project focuses on the development and investigation of surface covering, namely coating or sizing, for natural fibres reinforcing composites (focusing on bamboo or flax). While being innovative for the industry, the surface treatment formulations evaluated in this subject is already very promising. We propose to develop new water-based surface treatments based on the elegant combination of bio-inspired materials to promote adhesion between the fiber and the matrix, as well as improving thermal stability of the fibre. The solution will be used to coat a yarn or a mat of natural fiber and at the end produce a prepeg based on thermoplastic.

In this way, the student will: (i) use of the synthesized polymers as coatings onto the fibre, yarn or mat (ii) characterize the fibre surface and evaluate the efficiency of the designed solutions on composite materials, (ii) manufacture the prepeg and composite materials with autoclave.

Concerning the project follow-up, it will be asked to prepare a powerpoint presentation that will be regularly updated with new results and presented to the supervising team. A final report and a final presentation will have to be prepared. An excel file containing all the details about the experimental activities should be daily used as a lab book.
