How will you contribute?

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control


You will join the Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of ERIN. SUSTAIN develops knowledge, transferable (software) technologies, practical methods and outreach activities for the simulation and comprehensive sustainability assessment of societal systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable eco-innovation, through products and technologies, as well as support sustainability-oriented policy implementation and behavioural change to promote decarbonisation transitions.

Within the SUSTAIN Unit, you will be incorporated in the Life Cycle Sustainability Analysis (LCSA) research group. The group consists of ca. 25 researchers developing sustainability metrics and indicators, to assess the environmental and social impacts of products, technologies, territories and policies, for both industrial organisations and policy makers.

 

Description

You will work as LCA analyst and LCA software developer in the framework of European and nationally-funded projects, contributing to three main types of research activities: 1) the sustainability assessment of innovative technologies, products, mainly performing LCA studies; 2) designing and implementing software tools for Life Cycle Assessment, in particular linked to the open source LCA framework Brightway2 (https://brightway.dev), 3) develop graphical user interfaces under the form of web applications. You will collaborate in the development of prototypes of web-applications and calculation backends.

 

Main missions will include:

  • Lead (as PI) or contribute to (as team member) R&D activities in Life Cycle Assessment, in the framework of European and national research projects as well as collaborative/contract research projects with industrial partners;
  • Lead the acquisition of European and national funding, contributing to highly competitive research proposals in the field of sustainability assessment.
  • Co-author high-quality research articles in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Contribute to the generation of IP in the context of your research activities (e.g., patents, licenses).
  •  Attend international conferences.

Education Background: PhD computer science or Environmental science

Required Seniority: 4 years post-doctoral experience

 

Technical Skills

 

MUST HAVE

  • Proven experience in Life Cycle Assessment
  • Previous experience in research project acquisition and management
  • Proven experience in software supply chain tools like git and version control systems
  • Proven experience in web application + REST API software development
  • Previous experience in the LCA framework Brightway2
  • Proven computational and programming skills (in particular in python)
  • Proven organizational skills and interdisciplinary thinking, a problem-solving mind-set, and a strong team-working capability, but is also able to work in autonomy and creatively

 

NICE TO HAVE

  • Knowledge of industrial ecology methodologies
  • Proven experience in working in an interdisciplinary context
  • Previous experience in EU proposals writing

 

Language skills

  • Flawless knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of German and/or French and/or Luxembourgish is considered as an asset.
