You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

How will you contribute?

Hydrogen is currently foreseen as a clean fuel to participate to the energy transition. It is already used for powering vehicles, in industries, and it is envisioned to be used in central heating for private building. Hydrogen is however a highly inflammable gas, with a low explosion limit of 4 % in air, and the general acceptance of hydrogen as clean fuel will depend on the level of safety proposed by the infrastructure. One important component of the safety measures is reliable and low cost hydrogen sensors that can be widely spread.

The goal of the internship is to work on conductometric hydrogen sensors based on new metal oxide nanostructures, namely copper oxide-based materials. Metal oxides such as tin oxide are currently widely used in commercial conductometric gas sensors for sensing various pollutants due to their low cost, but they show low sensitivity to hydrogen. New materials will enable to combine this currently low-cost platform with higher sensitivity to hydrogen.

During the internship, the student will participate to the fabrication of the gas sensor devices based on copper oxide nanostructures using advanced microfabrication techniques and will characterize the devices under various gas conditions to demonstrate their performances. The intern will moreover participate to the understanding of the gas sensing properties by combining the functional measurements under various conditions with advanced microscopic characterization techniques.
