Compulsory internship contract – 6 months | Fulltime/40h | From 01.04.2024 on | Belvaux

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You ‘d like to contribute as an intern? Join our Materials Research and Technology department

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing. These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

How will you contribute?

This Master internship focuses on the scientific exploration of the polymerization parameters of ELIUM® resin. The primary objective is to delve into the intricacies of its polymerization process within the temperature range of 100°C to 140°C, crucial for achieving optimal curing in a continuous unidirectional (UD) composite manufacturing setup. The investigation places emphasis on key variables such as line speed, die pressure, and temperature, all of which significantly influence the successful polymerization of ELIUM® during continuous manufacturing.

Furthermore, the study encompasses an in-depth analysis of ELIUM®'s reactivity, with a specific focus on achieving rapid polymerization, ideally within a timeframe of less than 2 minutes. This aligns with the dynamic and fast-paced nature of the manufacturing process. Additionally, the research extends to evaluating ELIUM®'s pot life in the impregnation bath. The goal is to ascertain a duration exceeding 8 hours at ambient temperature, strategically aligned with continuous production schedules.

The outcomes of this scientific investigation are anticipated to play a pivotal role in advancing the development and successful implementation of thermoplastic-based composites utilizing ELIUM® within the realm of continuous composites manufacturing processes.
