You will join the Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit, focusing particularly on the development of innovative use cases and new digital business models for today's advanced energy systems, which shall be integrated into the ICES’ intelligent digital energy platform. The ICES research unit is dedicated to developing groundbreaking, market-oriented solutions in energy generation, distribution, and consumption, addressing the challenges of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring energy security, formulating feasible business models, and advancing social outreach.
How will you contribute?
You will serve as the primary expert for researching, developing, deploying, and capitalizing on innovative use cases and digital business models in modern energy systems.
Your role will be integral in market-focused R&D projects, where you will play a key role in crafting and implementing profitable, digitalized business models for distributed energy ventures. You will be in charge of utilizing and enhancing the cloud-based intelligent digital energy platform developed at ICES. Your collaboration with various research and technology teams will be essential in introducing and integrating new solutions and services on cloud-based digital platforms.
You will contribute to RDI projects by:
- Championing the development of innovative use cases and business models for modern energy systems, fostering new projects and ventures.
- Integrating cutting-edge business tools and solutions into the ICES’ cloud-based intelligent digital energy platform.
- Creating and analyzing computational mathematical models for use cases and business models.
- Establishing effective teamwork procedures on the ICES’ cloud-based platform.
- Designing and enhancing functionalities, tools, and solutions to boost the efficiency, sustainability, and profitability of the ICES’ platform.
- Proactively analyzing current energy and service market trends.
- Understanding and responding to the regulations and standards of distributed energy in EU regions.
- Initiating regulatory sandboxes for new projects and pilot activities.
- Building collaborative relationships with various stakeholders in the energy sector.
- Promoting market-oriented collaborative projects and initiatives.
- Maintaining high-quality standards in operational procedures on the ICES’ platform.
- Collaborating across departments for optimal use of the ICES’ platform.
- Ensuring data privacy and security in compliance with regulations like GDPR.
- Securing research grants and funding for ongoing and future projects.
- Publishing research findings in top scientific journals.
Moreover, you will contribute to the dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RDI results through:
- Software licensing.
- Participation in the drafting of technical reports, scientific articles, patents and inventions.
- Participation in the implementation of technological solutions (proof-of-concepts, prototypes).

Education
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Economics or related fields, with specialized expertise in business models and market dynamics within energy systems.
Experience and skills
- A senior researcher with 8+ years of demonstrated postdoc expertise in digital energy business models, particularly in areas like energy communities, virtual power plants, and renewable energy and storage projects
- Hands-On Experience, Proven track record in developing and implementing use cases and business models for modern energy systems on digital platforms
- Deep Market and Regulatory Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the operation of energy and service markets, along with associated regulations.
- Solid Analytical Background: Proficiency in energy use case and business model analysis tools in the energy sector, such as HOMER, PLEXOS, Aurora, SAM, etc.
- Experience with Cloud-Based Platforms: Experience with cloud-based digital platforms and services for managing modern energy systems, such as AWS, Azure, GCP, FIWARE, Siemens MindSphere, SAP Cloud, Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, Cisco Kinetic, etc.
- Optimization Problem Solving: Solid experience in solving optimization problems using tools like GAMS, AMPL, MATLAB, Julia, JuMP, Pyomo, etc.
- Programming Skills: Demonstrable ability to develop dedicated tools and solutions using programming languages such as Python, C#, .Net, Java, etc.
- Familiarity with Strategic Analysis Tools: General knowledge of SWOT Analysis, Business Model Canvas and Financial Modeling will be highly valued.
- Familiarity Blockchain and Smart Contracts Expertise: General knowledge in Blockchain will be highly valued.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively.
- Communicative, eager to learn, self-organized, and creative.
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team within the ICES RDI unit.
Language skills
- Fluent in English (written and oral). Knowledge in at least one of the official languages of Luxembourg (French, German or Luxembourgish) is an asset.
