How will you contribute?

Join our dynamic team with this exciting job opportunity focused on the development of the process modelling of an innovative approach for producing thick wound structure made of (recyclable) reactive thermoplastic resin targeting sustainable H2 tank storage applications.

The aeronautics sector is preparing for the third generation of composite materials to decrease its dependency on petroleum-based resources. The demands for composites are expected to continuously grow up to 2040. The VITRICOMB project, to be carried out by Euro-Composites group and Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), aims at the investigation of novel and innovative composite materials for aeronautics relying on bio-based vitrimer resins that can be recycled. The VITRICOMB project aims at synthetising new vitrimers formulation and investigating their potential for making composite materials for aeronautic applications at lab scale. Recycling strategies will be assessed enabling to determine the most promising recycling route for the future.

The Euro-Composites and LIST collaborative research project, considering the market need and expected trends, is unique opportunity for proposing to aircraft manufacturers a disruptive industrial solution for composite materials enabling an economical recycling through component recovery and re-use. The VITRICOMB project is targeting on the sole use of vitrimers resin in the whole composite sandwich structure, including both the honeycomb and the laminate skin without the incorporation of other non-recyclable resin types. VITRICOMB will contribute to transfer research from laboratory to industry, starting from a technology readiness level (TRL) 2 (technology concept formulated) resulting in a TRL 5 (technology validated in relevant environment), to be demonstrated by a composite sandwich panel and an aircraft interior part made thereof.

This position provides a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of transformative advancements in sustainable composite manufacturing technology.

Your activities will include:

  • Leading the Design of Experiment and advanced characterization data analysis enabling the demonstration of the use of sustainable Vitrimers resin instead of the current phenolics resin.
  • Coordinate the internal and external support activities for advanced characterization (FST, thermal analysis, micro -tomography, mechanical testing) , and the internal manufacturing activities ( prepreg manufacturing, autoclave consolidation, core manufacturing) with the R&D engineer and technicians.
  • Responsible for the understanding of the process induced changes, both at morphological and material levels and associated multi-scale/multi-field methods developments, including mechanical testing, destructive and non-destructive inspection, thermo-physical analysis, assessment of Vitrimers functionalities at the composite level
  • Define process window for both preprep & core manufacturing as well as the conditions of sandwich composite assembly
  • Contribute to the upscale the process at prototype level.
  • Contribution to the process modelling and performance prediction by providing reliable experimental data set in interaction with modelling/simulation experts.
