Temporary contract | 13 months | Basharage

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a leading research and technology organization dedicated to pushing the boundaries of science and technology. Our Composite Unit and DMAC research group are at the forefront of innovative research in composite materials and advanced numerical methods, striving to drive significant advancements in materials science and engineering. The team research activity encompasses both physics-based and data-driven modelling of composite materials and processes. By integrating fundamental principles of physics with advanced computational techniques, we develop precise, predictive models that enhance our understanding of composite behaviour. Simultaneously, leveraging data-driven approaches, we harness the power of big data and machine learning to uncover patterns and insights that drive innovation in material design and manufacturing processes. This dual approach ensures that our research not only advances theoretical knowledge but also translates into practical, real-world applications, pushing the limits of what is possible in composite materials and manufacturing process technologies.

We are seeking a passionate and driven scientist to join our Composite Unit and DMAC research group. As part of our team, you will focus on cutting-edge composite materials and process modelling. Experience in physics-informed, data-driven methods for composite materials design and performance is highly desirable. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on innovative European research projects, contributing to the development of ground-breaking technologies.

How will you contribute?

You will be mainly in charge of:

  • Developing computational models for predicting material properties.
  • Using machine learning algorithms to optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Conducting finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate structural integrity.
  • Developing and use of advanced numerical methods and tools for microstructure, materials, and processes relationships.
  • Developing and implement physics-informed data-driven methods for composite materials design and performance evaluation and optimisation.

Among others, and depending on the area of activity, R&T Scientist duties may include:

  • Performs RDI duties with autonomy under general supervision.
  • Conducts small RDI projects or work packages in projects of regular size and scope.
  • Discusses and agrees with the principal investigator (PI) or their group leader the objectives and expected results of their work package or project.
  • Organises own work to meet objectives and deadlines. Informs regularly on work progress and addresses promptly any unexpected problem that could impact the work plan or the good development of their work.
  • Performs RDI tasks with autonomy: evaluates, selects, and applies scientific methods; conducts experiments and tests (following predefined protocols); makes critical analysis, evaluation, and synthesis

of new or complex ideas; evaluates feasibility and effectiveness of solutions; etc.

  • Work results may merit patent or invention disclosure. Contributes to the definition of patents, licences, or  prototypes.
  • Contributes to the identification of new opportunities for innovation or application.
  • Contributes to policy definition and implementation (e.g., conduct policy analysis and benchmarking, impact assessment, etc.).
  • Contributes to the identification and engagement of RDI funding. Provides support to on-going funding efforts. Is encouraged to define RDI project proposals under guidance.
  • Disseminates RDI results through the publication of scientific papers and technical reports and the presentation of their work results at workshops, conferences, and the research community in general.
  • Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to achieve goals.
  • Actively develops their scientific and industrial networks relevant to their activity. Starts becoming part of identifiable external peer networks.
  • Respects codes of research ethics and research integrity.
  • Respects and applies LIST-HSE rules. Alerts of potential dangers or risks. Takes care of their own safety and that of others.
