How will you contribute?

LIST is offering a 24 months fixed-term position for a researcher in hyperspectral remote sensing. You will work within a collaborative group of scientists and engineers at LIST in Luxembourg in the HySpec Project. HySpec (“Hyperspectral and other Space assets exploitation with intelligent data processing to support military commander’s decision-making process”) is funded by the European Defence Agency (EDA) and aims to address critical operational needs within the field of defence intelligence. HySpec aims at the integration of optical, hyperspectral, and radar imagery, which are governed by different physical principles. HySpec directly contributes to the EDA's strategic research agenda by advancing Earth observation, reconnaissance and data processing. In the domain of hyperspectral technology the project aims to exploit hyperspectral data for defense applications. This includes the development of algorithms and processing chains, both on-ground and on-board, to extract valuable information from hyperspectral data. The project explores techniques to remove atmospheric effects, retrieve surface spectral reflectance and emissivity, and validate these methods through surveys and air-borne data acquisition.

You will be mainly in charge of:

  • Organisation of experimental surveys and acquisition of airborne (drone and piloted aircraft) VNIR-SWIR-LWIR data
  • Co-registration of images acquired from different platforms and correction of atmospheric effects
  • Review of existing hyperspectral sensors and methods and their capabilities and evaluation of their effectiveness
  • Algorithm prototyping for spectral emissivity and reflectance retrieval and validation
  • Evaluation of hyperspectral SWIR data for specific defence applications, e.g. landmine detection
  • Contributing to project reporting and presentation of scientific outcomes in top-ranked scientific journals and at international workshops
