How will you contribute?

You are part of the Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform (BEAP). BEAP makes state-of-the art monitoring, analytical, computational and modelling resources accessible to internal users as well as external partners, such as industry, public stakeholders and academics. It offers a unique combination of high-level expertise, state-of-the art instruments and fully equipped labs for environmental analysis, integrative biology.

With the advent of the bio-economy, plants, plant cells and vegetal residues from agricultural or industrial activities are prospected for compounds that have activities contributing to the development of sustainable products in different industrial sectors.

Within BEAP plant cell cultures are established, maintained and used for the production of such added value compounds, In parallel multiple projects are run in which agricultural or industrial residues are studied for the extraction of valorizable fractions. The current internship will contribute to this by providing identifications of plant metabolites within a running project.

The main tasks within this internship are:

·         The extraction of metabolites from plant matrices

·         Sample preparation prior to LC-MS analysis

·         Analysis of LC-MS data; identification using our in-house database or available spectral data

·         Literature search to contribute to the validation of identified compounds as being bio-active

You’ll learn the principles of metabolomics, acquire experience in laboratory work and in the use of dedicated software packages for the identification of metabolites. As part of the BEAP team you’ll also participate and present during group meetings, acquiring skills that will contribute to your general development.
