How will you contribute?

The Advanced Analyses and Support unit provides a unique and optimum combination of facilities to respond to the needs of internal and external researchers and industries in (1) advanced characterization of surfaces, interfaces and structures, (2) elemental and molecular analyses and (3) accredited mechanical testing. Besides, its advanced technical support team provides support in the (1) assembly of prototypes, test benches, and technological demonstrators, (2) corrective and preventive maintenance and (3) non-standardized tests and commissioning of in-house developed equipment.

As Head of unit, your key responsibilities and main tasks include:

·         Together with the Science Director and/or LIST top management, you define the RDI unit strategy and the innovation roadmap ensuring adherence and compatibility with LIST strategic goals and priorities.

·         You deploy and implement the unit strategy, define plans and tactics, monitor progress, and adjust unit strategy in response to changing market and scientific priorities. In coordination with the group leaders, you break down unit goals into objectives and goals for each of the RDI groups and support teams. You guide and support group leaders in the achievement of groups’ objectives.

·         You are accountable for the definition, execution, and monitoring of the unit's budget. In coordination with group leaders and team leaders, you optimise allocation of resources to projects and activities. 

·         You oversee the unit project portfolio ensuring a balanced mix of industrial and competitive funded projects, and a healthy cycle of new/ongoing/to-be-ended projects. You coordinate with other heads of units to ensure an optimised and efficient internal support to research teams. You lead the prioritisation of funding opportunities and the definition and negotiation of collaborations with private and public partners in coordination with group leaders and the support of Business Development Officers and Science Business Partners. You oversee groups’ efforts to secure funding.

·         With the support of science partners and the Science Director, you identify and coordinate the development of technology pipelines that respond to market and societal needs. You lead the capitalisation of RDI assets and the transformation of knowledge and interdisciplinary work into innovations. You guide teams to deliver results and innovations.

·         You are accountable for the overall performance and the results delivered by the unit.

·         You follow-up and monitor the unit activity through reports and dashboards. You monitor trends or external factors that could impact the unit plans and activities.

·         You make decisions about complex issues concerning their unit. You are aware of the impact of own decisions on the unit activities and remain accountable for them. You coach and support group and team leaders in decision making.

·         You solve issues related to resource allocation, budget, fund sourcing, and team coordination. You guides and support group leaders to solve issues. You intervene in complex/challenging situations.

·         You act as a LIST ambassador.

·         You strengthen a culture of open collaboration, work excellence, result orientation, impact and innovation across the unit. • You build strong teams that capitalize on different expertise, competencies, interdisciplinary, and backgrounds. You demonstrate exemplary behaviour and is a role model for managers and employees.

·         You enforce and apply LIST HSE rules, alert of potential dangers and risks, and ensure the team has acquired the mandatory HSE skills established by LIST.

Education

·         The successful candidate will require a PhD in Analytical Science or Physical Chemistry alongside a minimum of 15 years of leadership experience within an equivalent research environment.

·         The candidate should in particular have a proven work experience and an established reputation based on RDI excellence in (1) advanced characterization of surfaces, interfaces and structures, (2) elemental and molecular analyses and/or (3) accredited mechanical testing.

·         He/she should have a demonstrated ability to manage commercial and contractual activities that support the industrial sector in characterization and testing.

Experience and skills

·         Solid strategy, management, and leadership skills, and the ability and experience to lead multiple interdisciplinary teams. Proven ability to develop strategic plans and draw roadmaps to achieve goals.

·         Solid knowledge of the research, technology, and innovation activity at national/international level related to the unit and relevant experience across multiple related disciplines.

·         Good knowledge of budget implementation, financial analysis, and reporting.

·         Strong excellent knowledge of project and program management.
