To reinforce its applied research activities on biodiversity, LIST is offering a permanent position for a technician in ecological survey and monitoring. The successful candidate will join the Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment (BIODIV) research group at LIST that focusses on innovating the way data is sampled in the field to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of living organisms. As a national hub at the interface between the scientific community and decision/policy makers in Luxembourg, the BIODIV group is developing and making use of traditional and innovative approaches for sampling, collecting and analysing data on various living organisms for assessing their changing conservation status and dynamics.

 

How will you contribute?

We are looking for a skilled and highly motivated technician with experience in biodiversity inventories and sampling approaches to strengthen our fieldwork and laboratory capacities for ongoing projects on biodiversity monitoring and assessment in Luxembourg. He/she will be integrated in the BIODIV group whose biodiversity experts will share their knowledge and know-how with him/her.

You will be mainly in charge of:

·         Participating in R&D projects on biodiversity monitoring and assessment

·         Conducting operational lab/platform missions or tasks with autonomy

·         Performing routine and non-routine tasks (e.g., tests or experiments, fabrication of prototypes, collection of samples, programming, treatment of information, assist analytical tasks by filtering, cleaning, and recording data, etc.)

·         Preparing and participating to data acquisition and sample collection in the field for several taxa (e.g. plants, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, mammals), including invasive alien species

·         Handling and processing field samples in the lab (e.g. wildcat hairs, freshwater invertebrates, flying insects, water/soil samples)

·         Encoding, managing, and processing data (e.g. pictures-videos from camera traps, sounds from audio recorders)

·         Contributing to the development of innovative approaches for the processing and analysis of collected data and samples in different types of ecosystems

·         Participating to the development of prototype devices for automated biodiversity data acquisition

·         Preparing and regularly maintaining lab/platform tools, equipment, and installations, reporting the need for repair and specialized maintenance.

·         Documenting work through manuals, experiment sheets or reports, proposing adjustments to predefined documents to improve their quality.

·         Contributing to the preparation of technical reports, oral/poster presentations and scientific publications

·         Generating and protecting IP in the context of his/her activities (e.g., patents, licences)

·         Demonstrating a strong client-oriented approach.

Education and experience

·         BSc degree in a relevant discipline such as environmental/biological/bioengineering sciences or equivalent, with at least five years of advanced/ technical professional experience in environmental or ecological monitoring and assessment.

·         Acquaintance with the implementation and development of biodiversity monitoring or assessment programmes

·         Experience with biodiversity field data collection and sampling methods and tools

·         Experience with laboratory work (e.g., handling field samples)

·         Good identification skills for some of the species/groups targeted by the biodiversity monitoring programmes in Luxembourg

·         Experience or strong interest in innovative approaches for biodiversity data collection and processing (e.g., camera traps, bioacoustics, artificial intelligence)

·         Strong work organisation skills and the capacity to plan work and establish priorities

·         Full autonomy on the execution of duties not requiring supervision

·         Driving license valid in Luxembourg and ease of use of vehicles in the field

 

Nice to have requirements:

·         Expertise in biodiversity data processing and analysis

·         Experience with GIS applications and/or data management software

·         Good skills in oral communication, an aptitude for scientific writing, and an interest in teamwork on multidisciplinary projects

 

Language skills

·         Good level in both written and spoken English. French or Luxembourgish would be an asset.
