How will you contribute?

The RPPM Group (Responsive Polymeric and Particulate Materials) is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Researcher to lead and contribute to high-impact research in the field of functional polymer and nanocomposite development for additive manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on 3D and 4D printing technologies and materials extrusion.

The successful candidate will work at the intersection of polymer chemistry, smart materials, and advanced manufacturing, guiding projects from concept to lab demonstration and industrial application.

The position offers the opportunity to shape the future of functional materials for advanced applications such as wearable electronics, soft robotics, aerospace components, medical devices, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire, coordinate, and lead collaborative national and international R&D projects in the field of functional polymers and additive manufacturing. Experience organizing and/or participating in multilateral research consortia (such as EU projects) would be an additional asset.

  • Design and synthesize advanced polymer formulations tailored for additive manufacturing processes, especially 3D/4D printing and reactive extrusion.

  • Develop and process responsive polymer-based materials and formulations for additive manufacturing with tunable properties (e.g., shape-memory, stimuli-responsive…).

  • Apply and optimize 3D/4D printing techniques as part of broader additive manufacturing strategies, including multi-material integration and functional gradient design.

  • Conduct comprehensive structural, rheological, and functional characterization to validate performance across scales.

  • Translate lab-scale developments into functional demonstrators for valorization in targeted industrial applications.

  • Collaborate across disciplines on topics such as (nano)-composites, smart films, membranes, high-performance and recyclable polymers.

  • Mentor junior researchers and foster innovation within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Hands-on experience in additive manufacturing, with demonstrated mastery of 3D and 4D printing technologies.

  • Proficiency in reactive extrusion for material development and processing.

  • Solid knowledge of responsive materials and structure–property relationships in polymer systems.

  • Expertise in material characterization techniques, including rheology, DMA, DSC, TGA, spectroscopy, and microscopy.

  • Demonstrated ability to bring research from lab scale to functional demonstrators and pre-industrial validation.

  • Familiarity with application areas such as wearables, soft robotics, aerospace, extra-body medical devices, etc, is considered as an asset.

  • Experience with multi-functional and multi-material printing, including mechanical, electrical, and chemical property integration is an asset.

  • Commitment to circular and sustainable material design, including recyclable and bio-based polymer systems.

  • Strong track record in project acquisition and coordination, including proposal writing and team leadership.

  • Excellent supervision skills with experience mentoring students and early-career researchers.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, for scientific and cross-sector collaboration.

  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to thrive in a multicultural, interdisciplinary, and international research environment.
