In the Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) research unit, the LCSA group aims to support industry, policy, and society by developing science-based, sustainability methods and computational tools for life cycle sustainability assessment. Building on strong expertise in environmental LCA, the group now broadens its focus to include social and economic dimensions, as well as better simulations of industrial processes and advanced manufacturing, providing a holistic view of sustainability performance.
We are looking for a researcher with relevant research (and possibly business) experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The successful candidate shall demonstrate strong expertise in life cycle-based methodologies and indicators, particularly their computational aspects, for evaluating the sustainability performance of products, processes and systems. She/he shall possess a proven track record in LCA research and business applications, ideally in the field of (advanced) materials and manufacturing processes, with documented experience in designing and implementing assessment frameworks across various scales from technology/product to sectoral level. The candidate shall be equally versed in theoretical and applied research, with demonstrated ability and keen interest in contributing to the development of digital assessment platforms and decision-support tools, and in transferring research developments to industry and policy applications for accelerating the sustainability transition.
How will you contribute?
· Contribute to funding acquisition via competitive R&I project proposals at EU level
· Contribute to research and innovation (R&I) projects (both methodological and applied) as team member and take project ownership as principal investigator (PI)
· Publish project outcomes in high level scientific journals and present at international scientific conferences
· Contributing to the exploitation of research fundings in view of creating impact in society

Education
· PhD in Engineering or Environmental Sciences
Experience and skills
· About 9 to 10 years of experience with at least 3 years of post-doctoral experience in Academic and RTO environments
· A publication track in LCA domain, with first author publications in relevant journals
· Hard skills: Solid experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), with hands-on familiarity with the open-source LCA framework Brightway (through direct programming in Python, using VSCode or Jupyter Notebooks, or via the graphical interface Activity Browser). Proficiency in scientific programming languages applied to LCA, and working knowledge of sustainability databases such as ecoinvent or EXIOBASE, as well as the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework. Basic to intermediate familiarity with generative AI or Machine Learning methods is considered an asset.
· Soft skills: comfortable working in teams, willingness to listen, problem solving attitude, creativity in finding efficient, scalable, or elegant solutions, precision in code testing and design, initiative to tackle challenges and create research opportunities, adept at cultivating and expanding professional connections to foster collaboration opportunities.
Language skills
· Fluency in English (and French), both oral and written. Other relevant languages are considered to be an asset.
