The internship is contributing to the CoMixS project which seeks to study how to best support interface design activities using mixed-display ecosystems. CoMixS is funded by the FNR under the INTER 2024 program and is running from 2025-2029.
How will you contribute?
Emerging intelligent systems are reshaping creative workflows by enabling natural and multimodal communication between humans and machines. In the context of design, web-based assistants powered by generative AI (e.g., diffusion models or vision-language models) can now transform natural language briefs into visual concepts—such as UI mockups or product sketches. These tools are not only powerful but also open the door for richer, more embodied forms of interaction beyond traditional mouse and keyboard input.
The goal of this internship is to explore how tangible interaction and other input modalities (e.g., speech, touch, gestures) can support iterative and collaborative AI-supported design activities. The candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of an intelligent, web-based assistant that generates visual content from natural language, while enabling users to refine their outputs through embodied and multimodal interactions.
Depending on the intern’s background and interests, the work can emphasize specific modalities (e.g., tangible interaction), explore different stages of design (ideation, refinement, collaboration), or support co-located creative sessions involving multiple users.
The internship will include the following tasks:
· Get familiar with the technologies used at LIST for multimodal and multi-display interaction (e.g., interactive tabletops, wall displays, tangible objects).
· Study the use of generative vision-language models (e.g., diffusion models) for concept sketching and design ideation.
· Explore tangible or embodied input to control and refine visual outputs in creative workflows.
· Design and prototype multimodal interaction techniques that integrate natural language, sketching, and tangible elements.
· Develop a functional demonstrator showcasing a creative assistant supporting iterative design with generative AI.
· (Optional) Investigate collaborative or multi-user scenarios for co-located design.
