The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies :
How will you contribute?
The rapid development of soft electronics, including flexible sensors, wearable devices, and bio-integrated systems, has opened new avenues for advanced materials design. The recyclability and end-of-life management of such materials, that rely on cross-linked flexible and stretchable polymeric matrix, remain major challenges. This lack of circularity not only increases environmental impact but also limits the scalability and sustainability of next-generation electronic devices.
In this context, the proposed internship aims to explore new strategies to enhance the recyclability of polymeric materials used in soft electronic applications, through innovative material design, dynamic covalent chemistry, and circular processing approaches. This internship will focus on the design and synthesis of novel vitrimer precursors derived from renewable resources. The student will develop innovative synthetic routes from bio-based monomers, optimize manufacturing parameters under mild conditions, and conduct comprehensive characterization (NMR, GPC, DSC, TGA).
The novel flexible and recyclable vitrimer will be then evaluated for application in sustainable electronics.
Goals of the internship will be:
Synthesis of New Precursors: Design and preparation of novel vitrimer precursors tailored for soft electronic applications.
Characterization of Materials: Perform molecular, thermal, and mechanical analyses to evaluate the properties of the synthesized precursors.
Integration into Electronics: Test the selected molecule as a component in electronic devices.
Performance Evaluation: Assess the properties of the resulting electronic materials, including conductivity, durability, flexibility, and other relevant characteristics.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed experimental records and contribute to the preparation of a final report or presentation summarizing findings and recommendations.
The project will provide the candidate with hands-on experience in monomer and polymer synthesis, materials manufacturing and characterization, and functional testing, while contributing to the development of more sustainable electronic technologies with reduced environmental impact.
