How will you contribute?

This postdoctoral position is part of a large European project involving universities, research institutions, and industrial partners across Europe. The project focuses on the development of novel atomic oxygen (ATOX) resistant coatings to increase the durability and reduce drag of satellites in very low Earth orbit (VLEO). The postdoctoral research will focus on developing and depositing ATOX-resistant coatings on polymers relevant for satellite construction, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymers, using plasma processes at low pressure and atmospheric pressure. The work will involve the synthesis, development, characterization, and evaluation of the coatings to assess their resistance to atomic oxygen.

Missions and contributions will include:

  • Designing, synthesis, and optimization of organic, inorganic, and composite coatings

  • Implementation and optimization of plasma deposition processes at low pressure and atmospheric pressure

  • Characterization of compositional, structural, and functional properties of synthesized thin films, including atomic oxygen (ATOX) resistance

  • Investigation of plasma–surface interactions relevant to composition and structural control

  • Correlation between process conditions, material properties, and ATOX resistance

  • Contribution to the preparation of scientific reports, presentations and publications.

  • Collaboration with academic and industrial partners, and participation in project meetings and dissemination activities
