How will you contribute?
You will integrate the DISCO Research Group and contribute to a European research project aiming to demonstrate how emerging connected technologies can support intelligent, resilient and ultra-reliable digital services for healthcare and emergency response in clinical environments.
The main objective of the PhD will be to investigate, prototype and experimentally validate 5G/6G-enabled architectures and services for demanding healthcare use cases, such as emergency care, remote medical support, connected clinical workflows and data-driven healthcare services. A particular focus will be placed on integrating IoT and wearable devices, such as physiological sensors, smartwatches, and connected medical devices, as data sources within these architectures, as well as on designing and developing end-user software, including web and mobile applications, to deliver and evaluate these services under real-world conditions. The PhD will have a transversal and applied orientation, with contributions to software development, experimentation, system integration, performance evaluation and, where relevant, selected network digital twin components.
Your responsibilities will include:
Define, together with the supervisory team, the research hypotheses, methodology, work plan, training plan and expected scientific results.
Conduct a state-of-the-art review at the intersection of 5G/6G-enabled healthcare services, IoT and wearable technologies for health monitoring, edge/cloud architectures, resilient connectivity, emergency-response systems, and experimental validation methods.
Investigate scientific questions related to the design, deployment, monitoring and validation of 5G/6G-enabled healthcare and emergency-response services, including the integration of IoT and wearable devices for continuous patient and environment monitoring.
Contribute to the prototyping, integration and experimental evaluation of 5G/6G-enabled solutions in connection with the project’s use cases and pilot activities.
Design and develop software components supporting the project’s healthcare services, including web and mobile applications for end users (e.g. clinicians, patients, emergency responders) and middle-ware for the acquisition, processing and transmission of data from IoT and wearable devices.
Develop methods to collect, analyze and interpret network, service, application-level and sensor/wearable data from experimental environments.
Support the development and integration of selected network digital twin components for modelling, monitoring, simulation or validation purposes.
Define and evaluate relevant performance indicators, including latency, reliability, availability, resilience, throughput, service continuity, resource usage and quality of service.
Analyze experimental results, draw scientifically sound conclusions and publish outcomes in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.
Collaborate with the research group and project partners, while respecting research ethics, research integrity, data protection and sound data management practices.
Complete the doctoral training programme, prepare the thesis manuscript and take responsibility for your own scientific, technical and career development.
