How will you contribute?

You will contribute to the ENERGY-RESILIENT-UA project, which aims to support vulnerable communities in Ukraine through resilient, low-carbon energy systems based on second-life electric vehicle batteries, solar PV, and advanced AI-based control. The project addresses the urgent need for reliable backup power for critical services such as schools, clinics and water facilities, while reducing dependence on diesel generators and promoting circular economy solutions.

The work will mainly focus on modelling, algorithm development, simulation, validation and remote technical support from Luxembourg. The successful candidate will not be required to travel to Ukraine.

You will be mainly in charge of:

  • Developing and implementing AI-based and safety-aware control algorithms for microgrids integrating second-life EV batteries, solar PV and critical loads.

  • Designing grid-forming and resilient control strategies to ensure stable operation under severe grid disturbances, outages and high uncertainty.

  • Optimizing battery system operation, including state-of-charge management, reliability, lifetime-aware operation and backup power availability.

  • Building simulation models of microgrids, second-life battery systems, solar PV generation and critical community loads.

  • Validating the proposed control strategies using real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

  • Providing remote technical support for the preparation, analysis and monitoring of a pilot microgrid demonstration in Ukraine, in collaboration with project partners.

  • Analyzing technical performance, cost savings and emissions reduction compared with diesel-based backup solutions.

  • Contributing to project deliverables, technical reports, scientific publications and dissemination activities.

  • Collaborating closely with academic, industrial and humanitarian partners through remote meetings and digital collaboration tools.
